Exercise - A Natural Mood Booster.

Feeling down? Exercise might be the answer. While it's well-known that physical activity is beneficial for our bodies, its positive impact on our mental well-being is often overlooked.   When we exercise, our brains undergo a fascinating series of changes. Here's a breakdown of the key players:

Endorphins are neurotransmitters, often referred to as the body's natural painkillers, are released during physical activity. Endorphins interact with the receptors in our brains that reduce the perception of pain and trigger positive feelings – that's the "runner's high" you might have heard of.   Then there are serotonins which  plays a crucial role in regulating mood, sleep, and appetite. Exercise stimulates serotonin production, leading to improved mood and reduced anxiety.   There is also dopamine, known  as the "feel-good" hormone, dopamine is associated with pleasure, motivation, and reward.Physical activity increases dopamine levels, making us feel more energized and accomplished.   Finally is the brain-derived neurotropic factor or BDNF which is a  protein that promotes the growth and survival of neurons, enhancing brain function and improving cognitive abilities. Exercise significantly boosts BDNF levels, leading to improved memory, focus, and overall cognitive health.   

You might wonder how long the mood boost lasts.  Well, the  duration of the mood-boosting effects of exercise varies depending on several factors, including the type of exercise, intensity, and individual factors. You'll likely experience an immediate mood lift after a workout, thanks to the release of endorphins. This can last for several hours.    In addition, regular exercise has a cumulative effect on mood. Over time, it can help regulate mood, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improve overall mental well-being.   

How do you maximize our mood boost?   Choose activities you find fun and engaging. This will make it easier to stick to a regular exercise routine. Start with small, achievable goals and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts.    Don't push yourself too hard, especially when starting. Rest when needed and pay attention to any signs of discomfort.  Exercise outdoors or in a pleasant environment to enhance your experience. Be patient.  It may take a few weeks of regular exercise to experience significant mood improvements.
